Apollo Creed, the world heavyweight boxing champion, decides to give an unknown boxer a chance to compete for the championship as a publicity gimmick. His managers chose palooka Rocky Balboa, an illiterate collector for a Philadelphia loan shark, as the fighter. Taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Rocky signs up with trainer Mickey Goldmill.
